Just Before First Entrance

In retrospect, trying to steal the many riches of that big house was not the best idea: it was located on Palace Square, where once the house of the governor stood, and the area was still high-scale enough to warrant extra City Watch patrols and even private guardsmen. But the prize was great, jewels and gold, things of great value and easy to transport if one were discriminating.
Too discriminating, perhaps.
The residents came back early (or rather, too early for the scoundrel's convenience) and found an uninvited guest midway into the third sorting of valuables for maximum portability and value. If circumstances were different, he could have taken a hostage and dominated the situation; the known truculence of the Watch would certainly lead to a fight where many would lose blood and perhaps even their lives.
Himself included.
A hasty retreat, a run through alleys and back streets, a smidgen of admiration for the persistence of the guards, and lo! a door. It should take him to an old market building with plenty of locked stalls and tents and stacked up goods, a maze with many exits where someone quick of feet and thinking could enact an easy escape.
He really was not expecting what he found on the other side of that door...
